A side-by-side Kilkerran heavily peated comparison, batch 6 and batch 7. Batch 6 was given by a kind sir, thus having the chance to do a head-to-head.
Batch 6 is 75% bourbon and 25% sherry.
Batch 7 is 90% bourbon and 10% sherry.
Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 6 57.4%
Nose: Sweats, ash and salts. Hints of hay and light peat as well.
Mouth: Ashy, sweet and oily in the mouth. Light peppery spice.
Finish: Salty and light smoke. Ashiness at the very end.
Nice scale: 80/100
Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 7 59.1%
Nose: The nose is generally more approachable than batch 6; you still have the salts, ashy and hay. The smokiness is more pronounced here. Brown sugars can be felt as well.
Mouth: Citrous, sweet and oily. Ashy smoky peats with saltiness start to show. Softer compared to batch 6.
Finish: Salty and smoky, brown sugar sweetness at the very end.
Nice scale 83/100
I have to go with batch 7, which is easier (softer) to approach, the sweetness, peatiness and smokiness are louder, and the aftertaste of brown sugar makes me want to revisit the bottle again.
