Distilled at Caol Ila distillery in 2013 and initially aged in refill hogshead before transferring into an ex-ruby port for a finish. Bottling in 2023 at 10 years with a cask strength of 56.7%. Bottled by Hannah Whisky Merchant, under the release of Lady of the Glen.
Nose: BBQ bacon and seashell, wet sandy peat. Burnt soil with red berries. The nose shows a much more fierce side than the OB Caol Ila- but it doesn't come off as 'mean' on the nose. Like sitting beside a campfire at East Coast with the salty sea breeze blowing towards you. Little sour- like dried kiwi. Some crude oil notes too.
Mouth: Honey, chocolate, ashy peat. Even a little bit like liqueur with crude oil below it. Wet beach sands and cranberries. Little leathery notes too.
Finish: Spice, cranberries. Shifting towards the dry side with ashy dry soil and woods.
If one feature were missing, is I don't get the citrus notes of Caol Ila, some of the Caol Ila notes got taken over by the port-which is not a bad thing, as that's why you uses port cask to finish. Both flavours integrated well.
Nice scale: 84/100
-Easy approach in the mouth, good depth felt like a 12-13 year Caol Ila.
-Thanks to Caol Ila that I can still afford to drink peated Islay Whisky
-BBQ, Sea breeze, cranberries, ashy dry soil and crude oil.
-83-85 is impressive in taste.
